Inch by inch, row by row... Compost comes today! The gardens at the Mother Center are taking shape, and the large cistern is being repaired, al-hamdulillah! Thanks to an inspiring and generous donation of $20,000 toward agriculture projects from Bilqis and Ishaq Loeliger of Baltimore, the Mother Center is able to begin work to add water storage and gardens to the land around the Center with its half. The upcoming auction will provide funds to finish the projects. New rock wall terraces have been built and garden plans sketched. At the same time, with the other half of the donation, the Community Land Circle is going ahead and preparing another acre on Lot 2 of the New Land with fencing and cover crops in the hope of planting a Fall crop or orchard. Auction funds will, inshallah, provide the means to install water storage and irrigation. (Allah’s) Gonna make this garden grow! And, a new concrete shell is being constructed for the cistern (below). A roof, new HDPE liner and pump repairs are next! The tank will store 55 thousand gallons of water for use by the Center’s guests and the maintenance of the gardens.

**THIS PROPOSAL WAS APPROVED BY THE SSC BOARD ON 3/20/09** Bismillah ir Rahman, ir Rahim
Introduction – There are three parts to this proposal: Projects at the retreat center, projects at the new land’s Lot 2, and a fundraising plan. A meeting between the Agriculture Circle, the Community Land Circle and the Razzaq Circle on March 2, 2009 resulted in an agreement that these projects are part of a larger package and that all of them need to be pursued at this time, and done so in a cooperative manner with no separation or sense of competition between them, insha’allah. |
